Lower Towamensing Township supervisors on Tuesday heard a pitch from a neighboring municipality about police regionalization.

Weissport Interim Chief of Police Anthony Vaillant noted that the township is covered by state police, who sometimes may be as far as several hours away from responding.

Vaillant then proposed contracted police services between Weissport and Lower Towamensing Township, and said Weissport would have a dedicated officer to service the area 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Additionally, Vaillant said that he has spoken to Parryville and created a log sheet with how many calls to service Weissport has responded to.

“Demographics change, times are changing,” Vaillant said. “Why not get ahead of the times rather than behind?”

Vaillant added that a lot of police departments are regionalizing to ease the burden.

He then suggested having an impound yard for vehicle crashes, for vehicles that cannot be on the roadways.

Vaillant said if township officials would tell them what’s happening in their jurisdiction, he could guarantee someone would be there.

In July, Weissport hired Vaillant as interim chief of police at $25 per hour for 16 hours per week.

Supervisors did not take any action on the matter.
