Nesquehoning continues to look at the blighted properties within its community.

Last week, resident Abbie Guardiani pointed out to council that a half-double home on the 100 block of East Center Street has been deteriorating over the years, and is owned by a person from New York who doesn’t reside in the home. The owner also owes $649 in taxes on the property, but has previously owed taxes and paid before it went up for tax sale. Since then he again left the property to continue to deteriorate.

Guardiani said that the property has been posted by ARRO Consulting for the violations.

She pointed out that a few years ago, when she was on council, an arrest warrant had been issued for the owner, as well as fines being filed.

Guardiani asked if council was planning to continue to pursue the matter with the fines that had previously been filed, or if they had started over again.

Councilwoman Sue Smith, who chairs the blight committee, said that the committee met with the borough’s code enforcement officer and will continue looking into the matter.

“It is going to be addressed,” Smith said, adding that they will do their research before the next meeting.

Council then reminded residents that property maintenance is part of the borough ordinances.

“We’re trying to be as diligent as we can,” Smith said.
