Lehighton Borough Council will hold a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. today.

The agenda lists an executive session for personnel reasons.

After the meeting resumes, council is expected to accept the letter of resignation of an employee.

That is to be followed by discussion on current borough administrative vacancies.

Last month, borough council held a special meeting and approved an administrative vacancy committee for personnel reasons.

The only matter listed on that special meeting agenda under new business was discussion on current borough vacancies.

At the onset of that meeting, borough council went into executive session.

After nearly 25 minutes, borough council returned to regular session.

On a 6-0 vote, borough council approved an administrative vacancy committee for personnel reasons.

The committee was comprised of borough Manager Dane DeWire, council President Dave Zimmerman and borough Mayor Ryan Saunders.

Approached after that meeting, Zimmerman declined to discuss why the committee was formed.

Earlier this month, after about a 30-minute executive session, borough council on a 3-2 vote hired Martina Hill as new borough secretary, at a salary of $23.55 per hour.

Councilwoman Becky Worthy, Councilman Dave Arndt and Zimmerman were in favor, with councilmen Joe Flickinger and Grant Hunsicker opposed.

Jessica Ahner had been hired in May 2024 at a special meeting on a one-year contract at a salary of $50,000. She was not at the meeting this month.

Just prior to the motion to hire Hill, borough council on a 5-0 vote agreed to appoint DeWire as acting secretary until the position was filled.

Hill most recently served as the borough’s part-time police department administration clerk from January to July.
