Plastics will soon be accepted at Franklin Township’s drop-off recycling center.

Township assistant secretary Elizabeth Grodis noted at last week’s board of supervisors meeting they are in the second month of collecting recycling with being open two days a week.

“I feel as if everything has been going as well as I expected it to be,” Grodis said. “Our vehicles have been increasing slowly, and I hope to see them increase more as we are now going to be able to accept plastics starting the first week in September.”

Grodis said the drop-off recycling center will begin to accept plastics as of Sept. 3 from residents.

“So, I’m hopeful that everything will just kind of go up from there,” she said. “So, for the second month, I would say we’re doing good so far.”

Supervisor Fred Kemmerer Jr. lauded all those who have played a role in the drop-off recycling center’s success to date.

“I want to thank all the volunteers that we have, Liz is an employee here, but she puts in a lot of hours voluntarily to the recycling, Jill (Renfrew) who’s there all the time and there’s a number of others that have given their time,” Kemmerer said. “In order for it to be successful it takes people that are willing to give their time, so we appreciate it.”

In June, supervisors held an open house at the pavilions at Phifer’s Ice Dam to learn about the new recycling center. Residents were also able to pick up recycling bins.

The new recycling center is set up in the gated section behind the township garage and police department on Fairyland Road.

The center began operations July 2. It is open from 3-7 p.m. Thursdays and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays, to Franklin Township residents only.

Recycling passes have been given out that show they are residents of Franklin Township, and must be shown at the gate before dropping off recycling items.

Franklin Township originally shut down its recycling center in April 2020. The drop-off facility was discontinued because users were contaminating the bins with plastic bags and general household garbage.
