ID theft seminar

Jackson Township is hosting an identity theft seminar Thursday at the neighboring Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Company at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The speaker will be David Shallcross from the state Attorney General’s Office, who is director of Senior Protection.

Free kids meals

The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network’s free Meals for Kids program is continuing through Thursday from 8-11 a.m.

Families will receive five days of shelf-stable breakfasts and lunches for each child up to age 18. Young people over 18 who are enrolled in school programs for students with disabilities are also eligible.

There are no residency or income requirements; all the PVEN needs is the number of children in need of the food. Verify that there are still openings for the final day of this year’s program by calling the PVEN at 570-992-3136.

Hot dog sale set

The West End Fire Company is holding a hot dog sale from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Kinsley’s ShopRite in Brodheadsville.

Special guest

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville, will host a special guest on Saturday and Sunday: the Rev. A. Loshington from The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate.

“The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate are a Roman Catholic congregation of priests and brothers serving poor and abandoned people in the United States and 70 countries around the world,” according to the organization’s website.

Members of the congregation, who total more than 3,000, go to areas of greatest need amid difficult situations and minister by comforting the ill, feeding the hungry, sheltering folks and bringing hope to all.

Farmers market

Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, will host its next farmers market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the church grounds.

Pierogi sale

The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network is selling frozen pierogies through Saturday.

Orders, from The Pierogi Kings, will be accepted through Saturday.

Each order consists of one dozen frozen pierogies. Flavors are cheddar, buffalo chicken, jalapeno, garlic, bacon and apple.

Pickup will be at the PVEN pantry’s office from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 2 and Sept. 3, and from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 4.

Pierogies can be ordered at www.the pierogies.com/pven.

The orders will help support folks in need.

Sunday bonfire

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville, is holding its annual Family Rosary Bonfire at 7 p.m. Sunday.

It will be held behind the pavilion and include a bonfire, s’mores, games and the rosary.

Parishioners are told to “bring yourself, bring a friend, bring your family, and bring a chair (or a blanket.)”

Grief workshops

Virtual Good Grief workshops are being offered monthly in August and September by St. Luke’s Hospice Bereavement Program.

They are 90 minutes in duration and are scheduled for 1-2:30 p.m. Aug. 20 and Sept. 10, and 6-7 p.m. tonight and Sept. 23.

A little history

From Effort UMC comes bit of West End History about the Hillside Cemetery and the cemetery’s association:

“Since the late 1800s, Effort United Methodist Church and St. John’s Lutheran Church have been partners in overseeing and financially supporting the Hillside Memorial Cemetery. In 1979 the cemetery was incorporated and a covenant was agreed upon that the governing board of the cemetery would consist of members from both churches and that EUMC and St. John’s would continue to maintain and provide the financial needs of the cemetery. Your generous donations will help provide much-needed funds for the upkeep of the nonprofit Hillside Memorial Cemetery.”

Those donations can be given to either church, but should be appropriately marked.

WEF coming

The West End Fair is getting closer. The dates are Aug. 23 through Aug. 29.

This year’s edition of the annual event includes celebrating America’s 250 birthday.

Gates open daily at 2 p.m. Children ages 10 and under get a free pass, but older youths and adults must pay admission.

The annual opening day Fair Vesper Service, a praise service, will take place on the main stage at 4 p.m.

The offering will benefit the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network, which helps many local families in need.

WE Democrats

The West End Democrats will meet on Sept. 2 at the Western Pocono Community Library at 6 p.m., a change from the group’s regular meeting due to the Sept. 3 “Music, Mix & Mingle” taking place to benefit Thomas Kucer’s candidacy for the state House of Representatives at Sorrenti Family Estate Winery.

That event is slated for 5-8 p.m.

Snow removal bids

Effort UMC Trustees are seeking for bids for the 2026-27 season of snow removal.

All proposals will be submitted to the trustees by the Sept. 14 meeting.

Summer bog walks

The Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center guided weekly Tannersville Bog Walks for summer are underway Wednesdays through Sept. 9. There is a cost.

The two-hour walks begin at 10 a.m. and are conducted by an environmental educator. Participants can learn about how the bog was formed and about its plant and animal life.

Golf outing set

Arts fest ahead

The 48th annual Celebration of the Arts Festival kicks off Saturday, Sept. 12, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 13, in Delaware Water Gap.

It begins at noon each day. However, at 10 a.m. Sunday there will be a free Jazz Church Service by the Church of the Mountain on the main stage, followed by various musicians and groups of musicians.
