A Nesquehoning man faces charges for hitting a bicyclist and leaving the scene early last week.

William D. Hawk, 47, of West Marconi Avenue, was arraigned Friday evening on charges of aggravated assault by vehicle, accidents involving death or personal injury, simple assault, reckless driving and reckless endangerment.

District Judge William Kissner set bail at $50,000 unsecured, and a preliminary hearing before District Judge Beth Dodson is scheduled Aug. 19.

According to court papers, the incident happened Aug. 4 at 2:30 p.m. as Hawk was driving a white Honda Accord west in the 600-block of East Catawissa Street.

Hawk lost control of his vehicle, left the travel lane and struck the victim, who was riding a bicycle on the north shoulder of the road, court papers said. Hawk briefly stopped, and then continued west on Catawissa, failing to notify police or render aid, court papers said.

The bicyclist suffered injuries and sought medical attention.

Officers found a piece of broken mirror from the scene, which matched Hawk’s vehicle. Officers also obtained video footage of the incident.

Officers obtained a search warrant for Hawk’s vehicle, which was impounded, and the damage was consistent with the incident. Hawk was interviewed by Nesquehoning police and admitted to the incident, as well as returning to the scene to retrieve damaged parts of his vehicle, court papers said.
