PRESS PHOTO BY Katelyn BoburkaThe 1761 Tannery in Bethlehem’s Colonial Industrial Quarter will undergo a new phase of restoration after Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites received a $75,000 grant through Pennsylvania’s Local Share Account program, secured by State Rep. Steve Samuelson. The funding will support stabilization and restoration work beginning this summer, with the goal of reopening the historic building to the public after more than a decade. The Tannery, an integral part of the Moravian Church Settlements–Bethlehem World Heritage Site, is the only surviving 18th-century Moravian industrial tannery in the world and once produced leather goods for the early Moravian community and the Continental Army during the American Revolution. When restoration is complete, the building will once again host tours, student programs and educational events as part of Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites’ Colonial Industrial Quarter campus.
