William Mack, the new principal of the Carbon Career & Technical Institute in Jim Thorpe, advised the school’s Joint Operating Committee that he is focusing on training for all employees: staff, faculty and administration.

“I noticed we have a lot of newer staff in the past few years,” Mack said at the committee’s recent meeting. “My goal over the summer and into the new school year is to get people caught up, and to introduce some new training for the more seasoned staff, in addition to the mandatory training.”

Using the Vector Training module, he compiled a list of all employees and their records of training over the past three years, and used that to assign training based on state mandates and recommendations.

Some of the mandatory training required of all school employees includes: Suicide Awareness and Prevention; Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting; Epinephrine Auto-Injector (EpiPen) Administration; Seizure Recognition; Trauma-Informed Education; and School Safety and Training for School employees.

Regarding his appointment as the safety coordinator for CCTI, Mack pointed out that he has started his training.

“I began the School Safety and Security training through the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency,” he said. “I intend to have the training completed and receive my certificate before the beginning of the school year.”

Lehighton Area School District Superintendent Jason Moser, whose term as the CCTI superintendent of record ends on July 31, expressed his thanks to the committee.

“I just wanted to thank the JOC and the administration for getting to be here and getting to know more about the school,” Moser said. “I’ve enjoyed being here on a monthly basis, getting to know all the individuals, and learn more about how the school operates itself, and what it has to offer students in the region.

“I just want to thank you all for your hospitality throughout the course of the last calendar year.”

Later in the meeting, the JOC passed a motion to appoint David McAndrew Jr., the Panther Valley School District superintendent, to the superintendent of record position from Aug. 1 through July 31, 2027, at the established per-meeting stipend of $150.

Payment will be based on attendance at regularly scheduled Joint Operating Committee meetings and paid in full following the completion of the appointed term.
