Lansford treasurer resigns
Lansford Borough may be looking for a new treasurer.
Borough council accepted the resignation of Maria Ahner with regret and thanks on Wednesday night.
But council didn’t say much else.
Councilwoman Gwyneth Collevechio had made the motion to accept the resignation and Councilman John Zym seconded it. Council voted in favor of accepting the resignation.
Councilman Joe Butrie was opposed, and Council President Joe Genits then changed his vote from yes to opposed.
On Thursday, Genits said Thursday that he couldn’t release Ahner’s resignation letter, and an informal request was sent to the borough office as well.
Genits explained that he wanted to discuss the particulars of Ahner’s resignation in executive session following Wednesday’s council meeting, including the possibility of her staying on in a part-time capacity.
But after slogging through a lengthy agenda for more than three hours, council members balked at an extended executive session and adjourned the meeting instead.
Ahner’s resignation along with another employee work agreement were on Genits’ list for a closed-door session of council, he said.
“It’s on the body of council to figure out what to do when the date comes that she vacates her seat,” Genits said. “I had six other important items … (council) passed by and more by adjourning.”
Genits wanted council to hash out the next steps and possibly a new work agreement and reconvene Wednesday’s meeting to act on the treasurer’s position, he said.
Ahner has been employed by the borough since early 2024 and also serves as the borough’s Right to Know officer.
She also could not release the details of her departure, she said Friday, but did say she was leaving for her own personal reasons and offered to continue on a part-time basis until a replacement was found.
However, council did not act on any plans for her position moving forward. Genits said that he may call an executive session of council, or a special meeting, to cover items and details that were not addressed Wednesday night.
