The longtime provider of transportation services for the Lehighton Area School District, George’s Transportation Company, has been recommended for a renewal of its two-year contract that would give the company 3% increases in both the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school years.
Terms of the recommended contract were provided to members of the district’s board of education during a workshop held this week. Action on the recommendation is likely to take place during the board’s upcoming public meeting.
The pact calls for George’s and Leon A. George School Buses, its sister company, to transport students attending classes at various school buildings located in the Lehighton Area School District.
The contract calls for the district to pay a base amount for buses of $357.39 per bus per day for a double run and $283.30 per bus per day for a single run in the first year of the contract, and $368.11 per bus per day for a double run and $291.80 per bus per run for a single run in the second year.
For van use this year, the company’s rate will go up from $333.57 per run, per day, to $343.58 per run/per day, double run, and in 2027-28, the rate will increase to $353.89 per run/per day, double run, and $269.09 per run per, single run.
All PM transportation shuttles that were previously charged $28 will now be $30 per bus or van for this school year and $32 per bus or van for the following year.
The contract also has provisions for midday runs, activity and athletic trips and diesel fuel escalation clauses.
