Letter to the editor: Lansford settlement

Lansford has been listening to and watching the approach of the final settlement in “the officer suit.” The article in the Times News Tuesday, June 30, 26 covered the results to the point. However, what was stated in the article “Insurance did not cover the borough for the lawsuit.” My thoughts are that the article was lapse in explaining why the taxpayers of Lansford are now required to expend $230,000 (from the general fund) without delving into the reason for the lack of insurance. Was there a lapse in the policy? Who is responsible for seeing that insurance invoices are paid on time … Was there another reason for the refusal of our insurance company to honor the claim? If so, why was it not reported in the article. Please notice that I am not expressing my thoughts about the law suit … “the result speaks for itself.” However Lansford Borough Council is responsible to assure the taxpayers that the Borough is covered for any and all probabilities including a proper (paid to date) insurance policy. As I recall this is the 2nd major loss to the Borough of Lansford due to shoddy book keeping and/or total lack of comprehending insurance policy practices. In addition the $230,000 payout is probably only the tip of the iceberg … Council needs to inform the taxpayers of the total expenditure for our Solicitor, the Legal Firm hired to defend Lansford in the suit, and, you probably don’t even know about this one … Lansford Borough Council hired a second legal firm to investigate the “no insurance coverage” by our original Insurance Company. It’s time to put it all on the table and not continue with “just file a Right to Know form.”
