A Pennsylvania State Police trooper assigned to Troop L, Frackville, was struck and killed by a commercial vehicle on Interstate 81 this morning.
Police said the officer, whose name has not been released, was conducting a commercial vehicle safety inspection at about 7 a.m. near mile marker 119 southbound in Cass Township, Schuylkill County, when the trooper was struck by a passing commercial vehicle.
After striking the trooper, the vehicle that struck the officer struck the commercial motor vehicle that was being inspected and subsequently caught fire.
Police said the driver of the vehicle that struck the trooper was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Interstate 81 South remains closed as the investigation continues.
