The We Are One Foundation held a Shining Star Karaoke event Saturday at the Hometown Volunteer Fire Company. The program was free for men and women, young and old, with disabilities and special needs, known as the VIP’s, along with their families and caregivers.

The Hometown Fire Company is a new venue for the foundation.

“We had heard that they had autism training for EMT’s and firefighters, and we came and provided free food for them,” Tyree Harris, one of the founders of the foundation, explained. “The fire company liked what we do. They gave us a good deal, and here we are.”

Many of the VIP’s enjoyed singing along with their favorite songs, and loved the chance to take part.

Building an inclusive world, one smile at a time. That is what the We Are One Foundation does by holding various events throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia area for individuals of all ages with disabilities can feel welcome.

“We serviced 1,000 people in the last year, free of charge” Harris added. “This is our community. We want to make sure we have a voice.”

The foundation was started in 2024 by husband and wife team Tyree Harris and Suzanne Simkovich from Weatherly. Their son, Kobe Harris, is a young adult on the autism spectrum.

“We want people like him and in that community to go to different events and be safe; no one’s talking about him, no one’s making fun of him. It’s more of a family environment. If there are 10 people in your family, than all 10 get to come free of charge.”

The foundation hosts events like Karaoke, dances, movies, arts and crafts, kickball games, and many more.
