Wilson caps Bombers’ big night

It’s not often that a walk-off home run wins a game for a team with a seven-run lead, but that’s exactly what happened in Palmerton’s victory over Pen Argyl on Wednesday night in Senior Connie Mack action.

On his second pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning, Chase Wilson lifted a high fly ball that cleared the left-field fence to secure the Bombers’ 15-5 mercy-rule win.

“I thought the ball was going to hit the fence and not go over it,” said Wilson, who will be a senior on next year’s Palmerton varsity team. “I never had a walk-off hit before,” he added.

“Chase will be counted on next year to be a big part of our team with his bat, his glove and from the mound,” said Palmerton coach Matt Solt. “He’s hard to rattle when he pitches.”

After the Knights scored a run in the opening inning on an RBI single by Jakob Graziano, the Bombers plated three in the home half, a lead that was never in jeopardy.

Three walks, two wild pitches, two errors and a hard RBI single by Wilson gave Palmerton a 3-1 lead. After Robbie George retired the side in order in the visitors’ second, the Bombers put up eight runs, aided this time by six walks, two wild pitches and another error. Big hits in the rally were a leadoff single by Lucas Rivera and a two-RBI base hit to right field by Jayden Rivera.

Down 11-1, Chase Schaeffer relieved Lukas Miller on the mound for the Knights. He pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the third without allowing a run.

Due to George’s pitch count, Wilson came in to pitch in the fourth inning. George finished his work on the mound by throwing three innings and allowing one run on one hit. He walked one and struck out two.

“We played very good defense early on,” said Solt, “but in the fifth, we booted the ball around. But we pitched really well.”

The Bombers took a 12-1 lead in the fourth on an RBI single to right by Hunter Vasquez before Pen Argyl rallied in the fifth, scoring four runs on four hits by Miller, Jacob Policelli, Schaeffer and Carter Rowe to stay in the game until Wilson went yard in the home half.

“We’re getting better at having productive at-bats and just putting the ball in play,” said Solt. “I like to be aggressive on the bases even though I ran us into a couple of outs tonight. Overall, we played a good game.”

Wilson was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and also reached base when he was hit by a pitch. From the mound, he threw two innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits.

WILD NIGHT ... Pen Argyl pitchers walked 12 batters, hit two and threw four wild pitches.

LOTS OF DUCKS ON THE POND ... Both teams combined to load the bases six times in the five-inning game.

WALK, DON’T RUN ... The Bombers scored eight runs in the second inning with only two hits. Three runs scored on bases-loaded walks.
