Nolehi’s discipline delivers win
Whether a team faces good pitching or not-so-good pitching, the goal for hitters remains the same — deliver quality at-bats.
On Wednesday evening, Northern Lehigh’s Senior Connie Mack squad faced a struggling Moore Township club — with most of their issues coming from the mound.
But a patient Bulldog lineup did what it had to do, taking walks when Moore’s hurlers had control issues while putting the bat on the ball when pitches were in the strike zone.
The results were favorable for the visitors as they posted a 15-5 victory to even their season record.
“On their end, they had some (trouble pitching),” said Nolehi head coach Andrew Kabrick, whose club is now 4-4. “But you get what you get when you step into the box. So, we wanted to focus on having quality at-bats.
“We’re pretty solid overall up and down the lineup.”
Everyone in that lineup came to the plate in the opening inning as the Bulldogs jumped out to an early start, scoring six runs. Jayden Rehrig delivered the biggest hit, a two-run single, while Adrian Hassold and Tyler Bonelli both added run-scoring hits during a frame that also included three walks and several errors.
The RedHawks came right back with three runs to cut the deficit in half and also had the bases loaded, threatening to score more, but Hassold was called to the mound and got a key strikeout to get out of the jam.
“Adrian, he’s young but he throws strikes,” said Kabrick. “I went out and told him he just needed to attack the zone, throw strikes and let them put the ball in play. We wanted to make them get themselves out.”
Hassold did his job, allowing just one unearned run over the next two innings.
During that time, his teammates added to the advantage and pushed the margin to 12-3.
A bases-loaded walk to Paul Porobenski brought home a run in the second. In the third, though, Porobenski got a pitch over the plate and drilled it deep to center for a two-run homer. Ryder Gall added a sacrifice fly in the five-run third, while Bryce Wanamaker was hit by a pitch that forced in another tally.
Porobenski ended with four RBIs in the contest, while Bonelli reached base four times with two hits and a pair of walks.
Kabrick, who made it a point to get a number of his younger players significant playing time, is hoping as the schedule eases somewhat the team can get on a roll.
“Today I didn’t start many of my starters,” he said. “I played a lot of the younger guys to give them an opportunity. Nothing against Moore, but we look at certain games and you want to get some of the younger guys some exposure. My mentality is to try and get everybody an opportunity every single game ... Last game we played a tough Northampton team and we lost 3-2 and they didn’t get much playing time just because of where we were at, but this game I wanted to give them a start and let them play.
“We had to push a number of our beginning games back because the Northern Lehigh varsity team made districts ... the prior week we had four games. In one week, pitching-wise is something you have to work around. Fortunately for us, we have a pretty deep pitching staff. ... It’s good to be 4-4. Our main goal is to keep winning, and make it to the Connie Mack playoffs.”
WALK THIS WAY ... Northern Lehigh received 13 walks, three of them with the bases loaded.
BUSY SCHEDULE ... After playing their first game of the season, the Bulldogs had a stretch of five games in seven days.
RUN MACHINE ... In Northern Lehigh’s four wins this season, it has scored 59 runs — an average of 14.75 per victory.
