American Legion to conduct Memorial services in Slatington

The American Legion Allen O. Delke Post 16 of Slatington announced its schedule for Memorial Day services.

The main service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Slatington Veterans Memorial (intersection of Main and Second) In the event of rain, it would be held at Slatington Baptist Church in Slatington.

Ron Humanick, commander, Allen O. Delke Post 16, urged residents to come out and show their support.

“We’re looking for more community involvement to support the American Legion, and pay tribute to those who have sacrificed for our great country,” Humanick said. “And to keep this upstanding tradition alive.”

Rural services will begin Sunday. Humanick said they will visit 13 cemeteries, including 10 on Sunday and three on Monday morning (third one is more of a naval memorial service at the Covered Bridge on Trout Creek), and added they put down over 2,000 flags.

He said the schedule can be found on their Facebook page.

The main speaker on Monday will be Lehigh County Sheriff Joe Hanna,

Others who will be on hand include Slatington Mayor Jeralyn Walters Schoch, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Sons of American Legion, and Boy Scout Troop 66.

The Legion is always in search of members, Humanick noted. Members must have served in any branch of military service. Anyone interested in becoming a member may sign up at the Legion. Call the Legion at 610-767-4142, or call Humanick at 610-554-8309.

“Memberships of all kinds to help with future events, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, we need committee members,” he said. “Also anybody interested in a Northern Lehigh Hometown Hero banner can pick up a form at the Legion or access it on the Facebook page.

Humanick said monthly meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at the Legion.
