Roman, Trelease, Heil & Gearhart win D-11 titles

Roman, Trelease, Heil & Gearhart win District 11 titles; Hawk, Reiner qualify for states

WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP — Breakthrough throws. Pressure-packed jumps. Injury comebacks. Long-awaited state berths.

Area athletes delivered all of it Tuesday during the opening day of the District 11 Track and Field Championships at Whitehall.

One throw changed everything for Jim Thorpe sophomore Isabella Roman.

One jump was all Pleasant Valley’s Uriah Gearhart needed.

And one more district title sent Northern Lehigh’s Anna Trelease back to states.

Roman, Trelease, Northern Lehigh distance standout Emma Heil and Gearhart all captured district championships, while Lehighton’s Bodie Hawk and Weatherly’s Kelly Reiner secured state berths with standout performances of their own.

A breakthrough throw

Roman’s district title came before much of the meet had even settled into rhythm.

With possible inclement weather forecast for Wednesday, several field events were moved into early Tuesday time slots at Whitehall, forcing athletes and teams — including Jim Thorpe — to arrive hours before the scheduled start of the meet.

By the time many spectators were filing into the stadium Tuesday afternoon, Roman had already delivered the winning throw – and the biggest of her career so far.

The sophomore uncorked a personal-best toss of 132 feet, 3 inches on her second attempt to win the Class 3A girls javelin title after entering the meet seeded third at 123-6.

“I’m very happy. I’m very, very surprised,” Roman said.

If someone had predicted a league championship and district title earlier this season, Roman admitted she likely wouldn’t have believed it.

“I would think they would be lying,” she said. “Last year I threw 99, and I was still getting the hang of it. Then this year, just 132 is this huge jump.”

Roman said she focused on staying composed throughout the competition and credited adjustments in her throwing technique for helping produce the breakthrough performance.

“Just throwing my body into it helped me a lot,” she said.

The district title continued a strong postseason for Roman after she captured a Colonial League championship last week. Now, she hopes the momentum carries into the state meet.

“I do really want to hit in the 140s,” Roman said. “Seeing these girls throw 172 and stuff is just going to give me a lot of motivation to do better.”

Back where

she belongs

For a while, Trelease wasn’t sure she would have a track season at all.

The Northern Lehigh sophomore returned from a significant ankle injury suffered during wrestling season at states to successfully defend her District 11 Class 2A discus title with a winning throw of 113-9.

Tuesday marked just Trelease’s third throwing competition of the season.

“I honestly did not think I would be competing at track this season with how the injury was going,” Trelease said. “I’m beyond blessed that I was able to come out here and throw and win districts and leagues. I’m just happy to be here in general.”

Trelease battled through an uneven series while still controlling the competition much of the afternoon.

After opening with a foul, she moved into first place with a 99-1 throw on her second attempt before improving to 113-5 on her third throw. She later closed the competition with her best mark of the day on her final attempt.

“My throws were a lot more rocky today,” Trelease said. “I was kind of all over the place, but to be able to get that one winning throw in was just awesome.”

The defending district champion and reigning Colonial League champion said calming herself down after early nerves made a major difference.

“The first throw is always rough because you’ve got the nerves building up and you overthink things too much,” she said. “Once you calm yourself down, it just flows a lot smoother.”

Despite still dealing with pain from the injury, Trelease said she remains grateful simply to be competing again after uncertainty surrounding her season.

“I knew the injury was going to be a setback,” she said.

Running her own race

Emma Heil spent much of Tuesday’s 3200-meter run alone – and out front.

The Northern Lehigh senior separated herself early and cruised to the Class 2A district championship in 11:55.64, finishing nearly 30 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Despite the comfortable margin, Heil said pacing herself without another runner nearby created its own challenge.

“It’s a little harder because I don’t have someone in front of me pushing me,” Heil said. “I just have to completely pace by myself.”

The top seed entering the meet, Heil relied on split times from her coaches while controlling the race from the front throughout the afternoon.

“I still ran well,” Heil said. “I was really nervous coming into the day, but now that it’s over, I’m super happy.”

Heil said years of training and refining her race-day routine helped her peak late in the season.

“I feel like this season I really got the pre-race ritual down,” she said. “I know all the foods that sit well in my stomach, what I like to do, how many hours of sleep are best.”

She also admitted she is “extremely” superstitious on race days.

“I feel the fastest when I slick my hair back and put it in buns,” Heil said. “I try to wear the same socks every day.”

One jump was enough

Gearhart faced Tuesday’s competition with virtually no margin for error.

Because of a lingering knee injury, the Pleasant Valley senior made just one jump during the Class 3A triple jump competition.

It was all he needed.

Gearhart delivered a personal-best leap of 46-7 on his opening attempt — more than a foot beyond his previous best — before anxiously watching the remainder of the field try to catch him.

“It’s stressful for sure,” Gearhart said. “I’m biting my nails on the side.”

Seeded first entering districts after finishing second at the EPC Championships last week, Gearhart said he entered the meet believing a breakthrough jump was coming.

“I almost meditate,” he said. “I think about it all the time, 24/7. I felt like I was going to hit a big number.”

With only one attempt available because of his injury, Gearhart knew a foul would have effectively ended his day.

“There’s no margin for error,” he said.

Gearhart is competing through a partially torn patellar tendon and expects to undergo surgery next month.

Still, the senior embraced the opportunity to continue his season and now hopes to challenge the school record at states.

“47-2 or anything above that,” Gearhart said. “That’s the school record.”

Finally reaching 50

Lehighton senior Bodie Hawk also produced one of the area’s top performances Tuesday, placing second in the Class 3A shot put and qualifying for the state championships with a personal-best throw of 50-7.

Seeded fifth entering the meet, Hawk reached the 50-foot mark for the first time in his career with his second throw of the competition.

“It’s been my goal my whole high school career, hitting 50 and going to states,” Hawk said. “To do that in the same meet, it’s just awesome.”

Hawk said he focused heavily on consistency leading into districts after an up-and-down stretch late in the season.

“I really tried to dial in on my form,” he said. “I had a really good practice yesterday, so it felt really good to transfer that energy into today.”

A state qualifier without a track

Weatherly senior Kelly Reiner also secured a state berth after placing second in the Class 2A javelin with a personal-best throw of 112-2.

For Reiner, the accomplishment carried extra meaning.

Weatherly has a track and field team — but no actual track facility.

“We throw in a soccer field,” Reiner said. “I think it’s great. Weatherly doesn’t even have a track, and to go to states, I think that’s incredible.”

Reiner surpassed her previous personal best by nearly four feet while representing one of the area’s smallest schools.

“It is a big deal to represent such a small school,” she said. “There’s only 33 in my graduating class.”

Reiner recorded her best throw during the finals, and said ideal weather conditions helped her feel relaxed throughout the competition.

“I felt really good today, really loose,” she said. “It was like the perfect throwing conditions.”

Back again

The District 11 Track and Field Championships conclude Wednesday at Whitehall with additional finals and state qualifying spots still on the line.
