Tamaqua makes plans for America’s 250th
A trio of projects will add red, white and blue to Tamaqua as the borough begins to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.
Some will be up — as in the lights planned for Depot Square Park; some will be down — as on the sidewalks in front of several establishments; and one will be at eye level at Liberty Tree Park.
Judy Hoppes, co-chairwoman of the Tamaqua Spirit of Christmas Committee, asked for permission to string eight poles in Depot Square Park with lights in patriotic colors.
The lights will be lit from 8:30 p.m. to midnight during the entire month of July, she said.
Hoppes noted that Frank Fabrizio and Dan Odorizzi, who are no strangers to decorating the downtown, will do the work.
The Tamaqua Public Library will trade books for paintbrushes for its project.
Library volunteers will paint “America250” logos on the sidewalks at the library, Hope & Coffee, Tamaqua Community Arts Center and the Tamaqua Train Station.
Finally, a mural is planned for near the new Liberty Tree Park on the unit block of North Railroad Street.
Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt said the park committee is hoping to add the red, white and blue design on a back exterior wall of Tommy’s restaurant. It is visible from the new park.
“We’d like to spruce that up a little bit by painting the rear of the restaurant and putting a banner that says ‘Liberty Park,’” he said.
The building is owned by St. Luke’s University Health Network.
“This agreement would be between (the borough) and St. Luke’s to paint the back of the building,” Steigerwalt said.
Council approved the projects.
