Tamaqua students to sing favorites

The Tamaqua Senior High School Vocal Music Department will present its annual Spring Choral Program at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Tamaqua Area Auditorium. The concert will feature performances by the High School Concert Choir and the Jazz and Concert Chorale.

The Concert Choir will open the concert with “The Star Spangled Banner” as a tribute to America on our country’s 250th anniversary. “Sing a Joyful Song” followed by “A Red, Red Rose” featuring the poetry of the Scottish poet Robert Burns will be the next two selections. “Wanting Memories” by Idraes Barnwell will follow and feature students selected to participate in Schuylkill County Chorus this past year.

The Jazz and Concert Chorale will then take the stage to sing in a wide variety of musical styles. The chorale will begin with the classic hymn “Precious Lord Take My Hand,” arranged by Roy Ringwald. A jazz ballad will follow as the chorale will sing “My Funny Valentine.” The girls of the chorale will then sing The Chicks’ version of the pop classic “Landslide.” The boys will perform a doo-wop standard “In the Still of the Nite” as made popular originally by The Five Satins and later covered by Boyz to Men.

The Concert Choir takes the stage once again to sing “Turn the Lights Back On” as a tribute to Billy Joel. Next the choir will sing “Seasons of Love” from the hit Broadway musical “Rent.” The concert comes to a close with a rousing rendition of “Praise His Holy Name” by Keith Hampton. Following the Concert Choir’s last song, former members of the school’s Jazz Chorale and Concert Choir will be invited to the stage to close the concert by singing the Tamaqua High School Alma mater.

Accompanists for the choirs are Lilyanne Hess, Cecilia Ulicny and Debra Sweeney. The choirs are under the direction of John D. Buglio.

Admission to the concert is $5 for adults and $2 for children and senior citizens. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m.
