Firm hoping to add parking spaces in JT
A company is hoping to create a few additional parking spaces along West Broadway in Jim Thorpe.
During the Carbon County Planning Commission Tuesday, the board reviewed plans from Mauch Chunk Parking II LLC for a 53-space public pay-to-park lot near the top of West Broadway. No official address was noted on the plans, however, based on the tax parcel number, the property is a vacant lot located between 371 and 395 West Broadway.
County planner Ivan O. Meixell Jr. said that the proposed lot would include 44 parking spaces for cars and other vehicles; seven motorcycle spaces and two ADA accessible parking spaces.
It would be accessed from West Broadway through a paved driveway and would include new sidewalks along the street-line, connecting it to the existing sidewalk.
Meixell said that the property had been owned by the Drury family when it was cleared years ago; however, according to property records, the property was sold to the current LLC last year for $240,000.
The review noted that the land is located in Jim Thorpe’s medium-density residential district and had previously received conditional use approval from the borough in November.
Meixell outlined several areas within the plan that need to be rectified before construction can begin, including longer parking spaces, lighting, electricity to the site, stream buffers and a highway occupancy permit for the driveway.
For several of the issues, it was suggested that a waiver from Jim Thorpe borough be requested.
The commission made no recommendation, stating that the land development plan shows “several major areas of non-conformance with the Jim Thorpe Borough Land Development Ordinances that precludes any recommendation for approval of the land development plan at this time.”
All comments will be sent to Jim Thorpe and the applicant for further discussion.
