Monroe commissioners honor libraries, residents

The week of April 19 to 25 is National Library Week. The Monroe County commissioners recognized the national designation during their meeting on April 15 and gave certificates to area librarians, recognizing it for Monroe County as well.

The theme for this year’s National Library Week is “Find Your Joy.”

Commissioner John Christy, the chairman of the commissioners, read the proclamation, which stated that libraries “spark creativity, fuel imagination, inspire lifelong learning, offering a space where individuals of all ages could find joy through exploration and discovery.”

The proclamation also said they “serve as a vibrant community hub connecting people with knowledge, technology and resources while fostering civic engagement, critical thinking and cultural enrichment” and “provide free and equitable access to books, digital books and innovative programming ensuring that all individuals regardless of background have the support they need to learn, connect, and thrive.”

The proclamation also said that libraries partner with schools, businesses and organizations to expand essential services that strengthen the community. They also empower people by providing access to resources and training that support career growth and economic success. They also nurture young minds through story time, STEM programs and literacy initiatives.

There were several librarians at the meeting including library directors Ann Shincovich from Pocono Mountain Public Library; Patti Weiss from Western Pocono Community Library; Cheryl Brice from Eastern Monroe Public Library; Ian Boyd for Melissa Lopez from Clymer Library; and Mary Ann Lewis from the Barrett Paradise Friendly Library.

Commissioner Sharon Laverdure said, “One of the major things with libraries, being a past educator, is the fact that it is open to all ages and there’s resources for all ages, children to older adults.”

Laverdure said that the commissioners have kept libraries a priority over the years, and mentioned that she served on the board of directors for Eastern Monroe Library before becoming a commissioner.

“It was just an honor to serve the community that way, so thank you,” she said.

The commissioners also recognized successes of county residents and businesses with certificates. These include:

• Eli Lovene Kresge and Nelson Figueroa — Eagle Scout awards.

• Shoprite of Stroudsburg — Partners in Caring celebration.

• DOM Community Services and American Children Homeless Association LLC — grand opening.

• Jill Swersie — Artist of the Stroudsburg Borough Keystone.

“We say a thank you to all of them,” Christy said.
