No action by Lansford on potential settlement

Lansford Borough Council took no action on a potential settlement in a federal lawsuit filed by a former part-time police officer.

Council met in executive session for an hour to discuss the litigation and other matters after a heated and lengthy business meeting Wednesday night.

Solicitor Bob Yurchak said afterward that council members reviewed the information from last week’s federal court session, in which a potential settlement had been reached.

U.S. District Judge Karoline Mehalchick issued an order staying all actions in the suit filed by former officer, Gilbert Diaz, who claimed he was deprived of his due process rights when removed from the police schedule last April.

Diaz sued the borough along with former Mayor Hugh Vrablic, police Sgt. Shawn Nunemacher, Councilmen Joseph Butrie and Jack Soberick, and former council members George Gilbert and Jennifer Staines.

The parties have a 60-day window to reopen the case if the settlement falls through.
