Tamaqua Area ponders $500K paving pact

The Tamaqua Area School District is considering a nearly $500,000 paving contract for its administration building, middle school and one elementary school.

The finance committee advanced a COSTARS contract with Sacks & Sons Inc. for the three paving projects for the board’s approval next week.

Superintendent Ray Kinder said that the paving project was planned for next year, but they shifted the time frame because the price of diesel and oil is expected to increase.

Funding comes from $1 million set aside for capital projects, he said.

The cost breakdown is $257,258 for the middle school; $21,635 for the administration building; and $205,691 at West Penn Elementary.

The finance committee also advanced a three-year contract with McClure Company for the maintenance of the district’s solar array. The cost will be $6,000, $6,200 and $6,400 per year, beginning May 1.

Ligenza said that the district had received a quote from the company that it had partnered with, Solar Renewable Energy LLC, and it seemed high for the service. The quote was around $20,000 but could have gone as high as $30,000 with add-ons, she said.

Also advanced for board approval was a low bid from Bamford Concrete and Masonry for work on the stadium concession stand project at $18,675. Other bidders were Snyder Masonry and Bruce A. Snyder.

In other business, board committees advanced:

• Shifting the Tamaqua golf team from its home course of Mountain Valley to White Birch for the fall 2026 season, as Mountain Valley was sold for industrial use.

• An increase in the ticket price for the fall and spring Drama Club shows, beginning next school year. The fall and spring shows will go from $10 to $12, while and the courtyard ticket price remains at $15 as a fundraiser.

• The Carbon-Schuylkill Intermediate eService’s Agreement for 2026-27.

• The purchase of 19,500 envelopes including postage for the 2026 tax bills from the U.S. Postal Service at a cost of $17,706.

• The updated linkage agreement with Clarvida/RedCo. Group, effective April 3 for services as needed.
