Panthers’ Wehr no-hits Tamaqua
Danny Wehr had perfection on the stoop of his door.
The Panther Valley senior right-hander was nearly untouchable Tuesday against Tamaqua, piling up strikeout after strikeout with a lively fastball and a sharp-breaking curve.
By the time the afternoon was finished, Wehr had done something even more impressive — he didn’t allow a hit.
Wehr struck out 13 and tossed a five-inning no-hitter, working around four walks to lead Panther Valley to a 6-0 victory over the Blue Raiders in a game that was called due to lightning.
“I just kind of got out of sync. I was struggling to find the zone,” Wehr said. “(Catcher Kaden Koerbler) came out and settled me down. He did a great job behind the plate, he’s easy to throw to.”
Early on, Wehr was in complete command.
He struck out the side in the first inning and continued to dominate through the opening frames, keeping Tamaqua hitters off balance and struggling to make contact.
“Danny is very good when he’s on,” Koerbler said. “His fastball is tough to hit, and when that curve is working it is a bonus. But I felt it was starting to miss his spots, so I just went out and settled him down a few times.”
While Wehr controlled things on the mound, Panther Valley built its lead steadily.
The Panthers broke through in the second inning when Carson Jones reached with two outs, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single by Peter Kruslicky.
Panther Valley added two more runs in the third. Spencer Schirer scored on an RBI single by Wehr, and Gabe Perilli followed with a bases-loaded walk to force in another run, extending the lead to 3-0.
The Panthers continued to apply pressure in the fourth inning, loading the bases before Koerbler worked a walk to bring home another run.
They added two more in the fifth, as Derek Lazar delivered an RBI double and Schirer followed with an RBI single to push the advantage to 6-0.
Despite not allowing a hit, Wehr was tested.
Tamaqua put runners on base in both the fourth and fifth innings using walks and an error, and advanced runners into scoring position. Each time, Wehr responded with key strikeouts and timely outs to escape the jams and preserve the no-hit effort.
“Danny came out strong and I thought he was well prepared,” Panther Valley head coach Rich Evanko said. “He breezed through those first three innings, then later he started to throw a few too many pitches.”
Wehr finished his outing with 102 pitches — 57 for strikes — and faced 20 batters in the win.
Tamaqua threatened in the sixth inning, but the rally was erased when lightning halted play. With the inning incomplete, the game was called and reverted to the last completed inning, making the final score 6-0.
Panther Valley also showed aggressiveness on the bases, applying consistent pressure throughout the game.
For Tamaqua, Jake Yenser drew a walk and stole two bases, but the Raiders were unable to break through against Wehr.
HE SAID IT… “Kaden did a nice job; he’s grown a lot — he’s the future for us,” Panther Valley head coach Rich Evanko said of his catcher.
GOOD STROKE… Panther Valley was led at the plate by Schirer, who had three hits and an RBI. Michael Mazzie added a pair of hits, while Derek Lazar delivered a double for the Panthers’ only extra-base hit. Also contributing singles were Danny Wehr, Carson Jones and Peter Kruslicky.
NICE WORK… Home plate umpire Jimmy Mistishen did a strong job calling balls and strikes, his voice carrying clearly on most counts. Leroy Boyer also handled the bases well, as both umpires turned in solid performances.
