Germantown Grove hosts annual youth fishing event

At least 25 boys and girls cast their lines during the Germantown Grove Club’s Opening Day Youth Fishing event on Saturday. The event coincided with the official first day of trout fishing in Pennsylvania.

Kim Sargent, one of the coordinators of the event, believed this was the best turnout ever.

“I think it is because of the weather,” she said. “Years before, it was rainy and cold. It’s a great turnout today.”

The Germantown Grove Club is very active in the community. They partnered with the seventh-grade class at LB Morris Elementary School to teach them the process of growing trout. They also hold several special fishing events during the year.

The Fifth Annual Hunter Wolfe/Rug McArdle Fishing Derby for kids will be on Saturday, May 2, for children ages 5 to 15 years old. Registration begins at noon.

The 71st Annual Children With Special Needs Fishing Derby will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 7 and 8.

“We’re collaborating with the schools of Carbon County for those children with special needs,” Sargent explained.

Volunteers are welcome and needed. They are also looking for sponsors and donors of fishing equipment, prizes, and food and beverages.
