Berks Co. fire chief, assistant killed in line of duty

The Lehigh County Coroner’s office said a fire chief and assistant fire chief in Fleetwood, Berks County, were killed in the line of duty Saturday during a missing person search.

Chief Jeffory L. Buck, of Fleetwood, was pronounced dead on Saturday, at 8:07 p.m. in the Emergency Department at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest.

Fire Chief Jeff Buck and Assistant Fire Chief Robert Shick, both members of the Walnuttown Fire Company, were killed in the line of duty on Saturday, at 5:57 p.m., when the department UTV they were operating was struck by a motor vehicle during a missing person search.

Chief Buck was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest, where he later died as a result of his injuries. Assistant Chief Shick was transported to Reading Hospital, where he also succumbed to his injuries.

Autopsies will be completed Monday at the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office & Forensic Center.
