State police plan safety checks, sobriety checkpoints

Pennsylvania State Police officials throughout the region are conducting safety initiatives through midnight Sunday.

Beginning Friday, police from Bethlehem will conduct the initiative Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement Education Program that will target aggressive drivers, speeding, seat belt violations and child seat infractions. Troopers will be concentrating their efforts on distracting drivers who violate statutes regarding texting while driving, handheld mobile telephones, prohibiting use of hearing impairment devices, prohibiting text-based communications, careless driving and reckless driving.

In addition, Selective Traffic Enforcement Against Drunk Driving and Drug Recognition Expert troopers will focus on apprehending motorists who operate their vehicles under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance.

Beginning today, police from the Hazleton barracks will be conducting sobriety checkpoint/roving DUI patrols in Carbon and Luzerne counties in support of the Selective Traffic Enforcement Against Drunk Driving initiative.
