America250 events planned in Carbon

Carbon County’s municipalities have been busy planning for upcoming events to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.

Here are some of the many events planned so far, with additional events being added in the coming months.

• A poster and essay contest is open for all students in kindergarten through 12th grade, with a deadline for submission being March 16. Schools have received information on these contests.

• A Passport Activity book that celebrates the county’s history will launch in early spring and point out 18 historical sites throughout Carbon County.

• George Washington’s birthday will be celebrated at the Palmerton Library on Feb. 21 with a children’s program.

• A history fair is planned for March 14 in the Carbon Plaza Mall and will include several historical societies bring history together under one roof for the event.

• George and Martha Washington will be visiting the Aquashicola Fire Company on May 11.

• On May 23, the Lehighton Pool Pals will hold a boat regatta. Boats will be made out of cardboard and decorated in a patriotic theme. A workshop to construct the boats is planned for Feb. 28.

• June 13 is Nesquehoning’s 202nd anniversary, paired with America’s 250th anniversary celebration, which will include a festival, and various events down West Railroad Street.

• Palmerton will also hold its celebration the weekend of June 12-14.

• Lansford, celebrating its 150th anniversary, is planning a concert on June 28 featuring the United States Army Band in the Panther Valley Football Stadium.

• On July 2, the Lehighton Band and Zion Cantata will present a combined concert.

• July 4 will be the biggest celebration day for many municipalities, including Jim Thorpe’s community events, a parade in Weissport and ending with fireworks in Lehighton.
