Weatherly OKs budget with tax hike

Weatherly Borough Council approved its 2026 spending plan after reopening the $7.8 million budget in early January.

The council did not discuss any changes during its meeting Wednesday but did hold an executive session for personnel before adopting the budget.

After the meeting, Mayor/Council President Michael Bellizia said council had questions on the budget when it decided to reopen it on Jan. 7, and those questions had been addressed.

The budget did see a $25,000 increase from the one tentatively approved in November to account for a tax anticipation note of $125,000, instead of $100,000.

The budget also calls for a tax increase of 1.25 mills to 11.55 mills. Other taxes include real estate transfer tax, 1%; per capita, $5; earned income, 1%; and local services tax, $52 a year.

Residents will also be paying higher utility bills to the borough in 2026. Electricity and water will increase 20% and the sewer rate increased to $60 a year, or $5 a month.

The utility increases are needed to meet higher acquisition costs and fund infrastructure upgrades to aging utility systems.

Council is allowed to reopen the budget following an election year with a reorganized council seated in January. A reopened budget must be approved by Feb. 15.

Council scheduled a special meeting for Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. to adopt the budget following a 10-day public review window.
