tree identification walk planned for Feb. 7

“This bud is for you,” a winter tree identification walk, will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Feb. 7 at the Frog Hollow Nature Center near Friedensburg.

Will Thomas, service forester with the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry and expert dendrologist, will guide a winter walk focused on tree identification.

Attendees will learn how to recognize native trees and shrubs in their winter form by learning unique characteristics, including tulip poplar with its buds shaped like a duck’s bill, and sweet birch with its distinctive horizontal lines.

The simple tips will sharpen your tree identification skills while you enjoy the beauty of the winter landscape.

Wear sturdy shoes as trails are not manicured and may be wet. Dress for the weather.

More information is available by contacting Thomas at 570 449-4127.
