Weather announcements

• The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission are planning to implement vehicle restrictions:

Restrictions go in effect 12:01 a.m. Sunday on interstates and the entire length of Route 33.

• Coaldale officials remind residents to have all vehicles moved from the Avenues and Coal Street by Saturday evening. The plow is unable to navigate those streets with vehicles parked there. Please keep vehicles off those streets until Monday. Vehicles will be ticketed and towed

Snow and ice must be removed from a path of at least 24 inches wide from sidewalks within 12 hours after the end of a snowfall.

If snow and/or ice is so hard that it cannot be removed, the person shall put down sand or other abrasive to make travel safe, also within 12 hours after the end of the snowfall.

Snow is not to be shoveled into the street.

Casella Waste Systems has not made a decision regarding trash pickup on Monday. It will be posted on the borough’s Facebook page after a decision is made.

• Eldred Township Board of Supervisors have instituted a declaration of Local Disaster Emergency effective immediately. The supervisors are asking that you limit travel to emergency situations only. Please make sure that your vehicles and garbage/refuse cans are moved out of the township right of way.

Eldred’s Public Works Department will be servicing the roads once the storm starts and expects to have to make several trips on all roads in the township during the storm. Unfortunately, with the colder temperatures, salt is not an option. Main roads and hills will be spread with cinders to conserve materials for upcoming storms.

• Bowmanstown has declared a snow emergency starting at 12:01 a.m. Sunday. Emergency route streets are Lime Street to Ore Street, right turn onto Ore Street to Mill Street, left on Mill Street to White Street; Lime Street to Ore Street to Fireline Road; Craig Street, Lincoln Avenue and Cedar Street.

The declaration is in effect for seven days unless it’s terminated sooner.

• Lansford Mayor Denise A. Leibensperger has issued a declaration of Disaster Emergency for the borough effective at noon Saturday.

The declaration was issued in response to emergency conditions impacting public safety, municipal operations and essential services. It authorizes immediate and coordinated action by borough officials, police, emergency responders and public works personnel.

Residents are urged to follow instructions from emergency officials, avoid unnecessary travel where conditions are impacted, and monitor official borough communications for updates.

The local Disaster Emergency will remain in effect for seven days, unless terminated sooner, Leibensperger said.

• Nesquehoning police advise residents that with the upcoming snowstorm, that it is best to stay off the road if travel is not necessary.

Snow parking rules will be in effect.

Vehicles should be parked off roadways if possible to allow for plowing.

• Weatherly Police Department reminds residents that with the upcoming snowstorm, traveling may be difficult or not possible.

“By any means, we are no meteorologists, but we’d like to say it may be a good time to stay off the roads. We know some of you won’t listen and will find out quick that snow covered roads and overconfidence don’t mix, especially when you’re driving like it’s summertime in a vehicle that handles about as well as a 1995 Chevy Cavalier with bald tires, worn brakes, a weak battery and that check-engine light that’s been neglected the entire life of the vehicle.”

In addition, if you must travel, Pennsylvania law requires a vehicle’s windshield and windows to be clear of snow and ice.

“Any snow or ice left on your vehicle that flies off and hits another car can result in you being saltier than East Main Street because now you have fines to pay along with a new windshield for the vehicle that was struck by your slab of frozen water.”

Once the snow ban goes into effect, you have 12 hours to move your vehicle to the proper side of the street and remain there until the reverse is in place.

Once the street department is out plowing there will be zero tolerance for any vehicles in violation and they will ticketed and/or towed.

Also, when clearing snow from the sidewalks, do not throw it back into the street.

Keep 4-wheelers, side-by-sides, snowmobiles or any other non-street legal vehicles off the roadways.

• The Palmerton Library’s Winter Festival, scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed. The new date is Feb. 1. People who have already paid for their character meet-and-greet tickets can stop by the library for a refund if they desire.

• Saints Peter and Paul Church, Lehighton, is offering a second Saturday evening Mass at 6 p.m. because of the weather on Sunday.
