Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 23

Four local wrestlers moved into the semifinal round of the annual Coal Cracker Tournament on Friday.

BOYS WRESTLING

Coal Cracker Tournament

Four area wrestlers, all from different schools, have advanced to the semifinal round of the Coal Cracker Tournament, being held at Lehighton.

Those one step away from reaching the title match include the Indians’ Lukas Croizier at 141 pounds, Northwestern’s Chase Sukanick at 147, Pleasant Valley’s Evan Gillespie at 217 and Marian’s Rory Dixon (who wrestles for Mahanoy Area) at 154.

Croizier posted two first-period pins in his first two matches before advancing to the quarterfinals with a 6-3 decision. In the quarters, the Lehighton junior posted an 8-1 victory over Blue Mountain’s Bryce Bodenberg to make it to the final four. Croizier will take on Blake Boyer of Kennett in the semis.

Sukanick also registered first-period falls in his opening matches, needing just 29 seconds and 1:04 to continue in the winners bracket. The sophomore then reached the quarterfinals with a 17-0 technical fall in 2:51 and followed that another tech fall, this one 18-2 in 3:38 against Griffin King of Southern Lehigh. Sukanick meets Salesianum’s Carter Davis in today’s semis.

Gillespie kept his undefeated season alive in impressive fashion, posting first-period pins in all four of his matches. The senior Bear decked his first two opponents in 12 and 51 seconds before making it to the quarters with a fall in 1:39. Gillespie gained his fourth pin against Honesdale’ s Levi Landry in 1:09. The PV wrestler faces Faith Christian’s Cael Weidemoyer in the semis.

Dixon went the distance in his opening match, earning a 15-6 major, before registering three technical falls. The Marian junior piled up scores of 15-0 and 18-3 to advance to the quarterfinals, and then dispatched of William Penn’s Jamir Ross 18-1. Dixon faces Luke Hitchcock of Central Dauphin in today’s semis.

Six other locals made it to the quarterfinals before falling. They include Northwestern’s Nolan Koehler (162), Trent Croll (147) and Vinnie Fugazzotto (174); Lehighton’s Marc Macias (287); Palmerton’s Connor Messinger (129) and Tamaqua’s Rylan Reitz (116).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lourdes-Marian

A balanced attack helped Marian gain a 50-44 Schuylkill League victory over Lourdes.

Nine different players scored points for the Colts, who used a 13-8 third quarter to extend their halftime lead to eight entering the final frame.

Justin De La Cruz and James Cannon both finished with a team-high 10 points for Marian.

For the Raiders, Brighton Scicchitano netted 20 points.

Tamaqua went to the free throw line 60 times — making 38 — to help gain a 73-64 Schuylkill League win over Pine Grove.

Gavin Edmonds poured in 20 points for the Blue Raiders with half of them coming at the foul line. The winners also received 13 points from Jakin Tamagini and 10 from Brady McCabe.

Hayden Felty tallied a game-high 22 points for the Cardinals.

Shenandoah Vy.-Weatherly

Weatherly lit up the scoreboard in a 94-69 Schuylkill League win over Shenandoah Valley.

The Wreckers’ Ian McKeegan scored a game-high 26 points, with 15 coming in the first half, while Corbin Wagner scored 20 of his 24 points in the second half. Dominick Kokinda (12 points), Niko Saldukas (12 points) and Brandon Daivs (11 points) also contributed to the win.

David Burros led Shenandoah Valley with 28 points.

Blue Mountain used a big second quarter to take control and went on to earn a 72-44 Schuylkill League win over Panther Valley.

Cohen Werner netted nine of his 18 points in the second frame in which the Eagles outscored PV by an 18-3 margin.

Tyeirre Meade finished with a game-high 22 points for Blue Mountain. The Panthers received 14 points from Brody Breiner.

Pocono Mountain East battled back from a first-half deficit to beat Pleasant Valley, 63-53 in an East Penn Conference game.

Aiden Pierre and Anthony Tapia scored 14 points apiece to lead the Cardinals.

PV’s Jake Loch poured in a game-high 17 points, with Sebastian Sacci scoring 13 and Jaxson Haines chipping in with 12.

Palmerton rolled to a 47-24 win over Jim Thorpe in a Colonial League game.

The Blue Bombers held the Olympians scoreless in the first quarter to open a 17-0 lead.

Cate Morgan scored a game-high 16 points for Palmerton. Hailey Barry added 12 points for the winners, while Emma Rex chipped in with 10.

Olivia Snisky led Jim Thorpe with seven points.

Pleasant Valley raced to an early lead but couldn’t hold it, dropping a 46-45 EPC decision to visiting Pocono Mountain East.

The contest featured 75 free throw attempts, with the Bears hitting 25 of their 38 foul shots.

Alayla Green paced the Cardinals, who rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit, with 12 points.

The Bears received 22 points from Amaya Fuentes.
