JT wall repair to begin on 209

Lane restrictions will begin Monday on a stretch of Route 209 in Jim Thorpe Borough and Mahoning Township as part of a long-term project to repair a retaining wall, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

In a news release, PennDOT District 5 said work will start on the project, which will affect the three-lane section of Route 209 between Race Street in Jim Thorpe and Oak Drive in Mahoning.

Starting Monday, the three-lane section of Route 209 in between Race Street in Jim Thorpe borough and Oak Drive in Mahoning Township will be reduced to a single lane northbound and a single lane southbound, PennDOT said in the release.

The northbound passing lane will be removed.

The project includes repairs to an existing retaining wall along the highway.

According to PennDOT, the work will involve “moment slab/barriers doweled into existing wall, stone masonry repairs and other miscellaneous construction.”

J.D. Eckman Inc. of Atglen, Chester County, is serving as the general contractor on the project. PennDOT said the total cost of the work is $8,496,930.

Route 209 is a heavily traveled roadway in the area, with PennDOT reporting an average daily traffic volume of 11,067 vehicles through the project limits.

The northbound passing lane will open again on Oct. 1 for the heavy fall tourist season in Jim Thorpe.

Restrictions are expected to return next year.

“This traffic restriction will then be reinstated in January 2027 and will be in place until September 2027,” the release states.

Motorists traveling through the two municipalities are advised to allow for additional travel time, particularly during peak hours.

The overall project is expected to be completed in September 2027
