The Tamaqua girls knocked off previously undefeated Mahanoy Area on Saturday, while the Northwestern boys remained unbeaten in Colonial League play.

In other action, the Jim Thorpe boys gained a victory in the consolation game of the Marian tournament.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Mahanoy-Tamaqua

Tamaqua used a solid second half to pull out a 40-32 non-league victory over Mahanoy Area.

The Blue Raiders outscored the visitors 25-14 over the last two quarters to hand the Golden Bears their first loss of the season.

Millie Black paced Tamaqua with a game-high 14 points, while Kendle Miller chipped in with 11. Lauren Ligenza just missed a double-double, as she finished with eight points, 16 rebounds and six assists.

For Mahanoy, Felicia Bro finished with 11 points.

Jim Thorpe-Minersville

Minersville pulled out a narrow 34-31 win over Jim Thorpe in the consolation game of the Marian Catholic Tournament.

The two teams were tied entering the fourth quarter, but Jenna Cullen and Lara Gretsky both hit three-pointers for the Miners during the final frame as they outscored the Olympians 12-9.

Rilynn Brennan scored nine points to pace the winners, who snapped a seven-game losing skid.

Thorpe received a team-high nine points from Olivia Snisky, while Ciara Lees and Gloria Strohl each chipped in with seven.

Crestwood was too much for Pleasant Valley, as the Comets cruised to a 67-13 non-conference win.

Keira Dougherty netted 21 of her game-high 25 points before halftime, as the Comets jumped out to a 47-9 lead.

The winners also received 14 points from Jackie Gallagher.

Noelle Wolff and Payton Shillady both had four points for PV.

In the consolation game of the Marian Catholic Tournament, Jim Thorpe jumped out early and never looked back on its way to a 64-28 victory over MMI Prep.

Brody Schrantz poured in 14 of his team-high 18 points in the first half, as the Olympians built a 34-8 halftime advantage.

Thorpe’s Pierce Gothard added 13 points, while Cole Lazorick chipped in with 10.

The Preppers’ Jandel Figueroa led all scorers with 19 points.

Northwestern pulled away in the second half to remain unbeaten in the Colonial League, as the Tigers earned a 45-34 win over Bangor.

The Slaters held a slim 17-16 halftime lead, but Northwestern outscored the visitors 29-17 the rest of the way to gain the victory.

Mason Bollinger scored 13 points to pace the Tigers, while teammates Malachi Coleman and Brady Krimmel both finished right behind with 12.

For the Slaters, Jason Marcantonis tallied 13 points.
