Business cited for blowing debris
A Nesquehoning business was cited by the Department of Environmental Protection after a concern was received over regulated waste found along the road leading to the business.
During borough council’s meeting last week, Nesquehoning Borough solicitor Robert Yurchak reported a letter he received from DEP regarding the issue outside Alpha Bio-Med Services, doing business as Sharp’s Compliance, that was observed in November.
“Alpha Bio-Med was cited by DEP for their actions,” he said, noting that he has not heard any additional information from the company.
According to the letter, which the borough received in early December, the incident was reported to the borough on Nov. 7 after regulated medical waste was found along Industrial Road outside the Alpha Bio-Med Services facility. The business is located at 600 Industrial Road.
DEP conducted an inspection on Nov. 18 and found that the facility’s waste compactor let some small pieces of processed medical waste to escape during the compacting process.
“A few pieces of regulated medical waste was observed on the ground in the compactor area, however no regulated medical waste was observed anywhere along Industrial Road in the vicinity of the facility,” the letter states.
DEP also stated that there were no issues observed regarding unprocessed regulated medical waste.
It was noted that the waste that enters the compactor has already been processed and disinfected; however, even processed waste being released into anything other than what is approved is unacceptable.
Because of this, DEP issued a violation of the municipal waste regulations and facility’s permit for “failure to store processed waste in an enclosed container, which prevents the dispersal or discharge of the waste” and a notice of violation requesting corrective action was sent to the facility.
“I presume they’re going to have to clean it up,” Yurchak told council.
No further discussion on the matter occurred.
