The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for the region, with winds from 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 60 mph.
The alert is in effect until 10 p.m, with damaging winds expected to blow down trees and power lines and widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
People are advised to remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. Use caution if you must drive.
PPL is already reporting 44,565 customers without power in the utility’s coverage area as of 5 p.m. That includes 2,049 in Carbon, with 1,051 without power in Mahohing; 4,162 in Lehigh County, with 816 in Washington Township; nearly 3,000 in Monroe County, with outages throughout Polk, Chestnuthill, Eldred and Jackson Townships; 4,000 in Northampton County and 2,790 in Schuylkill County. That includes more than 500 in Tamaqua borough.
First Energy is reporting outages in Monroe, with 57 people without power as of 5 p.m.
A portion of Mahoning township is without power effecting just over a thousand customers. The outage runs from Normal Square along Routes 443 and 902 to Lehighton. The power loss has closed local businesses and Affected traffic lights along the way. COPYRIGHT LARRY NEFF/SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS
