December 17, 1957 — Billy Bechtold hits the tying shot with 13 seconds to play and then converts a free throw with no time left on the clock to give Jim Thorpe a thrilling 56-55 comeback win over host Slatington. The Olympians trail by four points with a minute and a half to play, but Bechtold connects with 35 seconds left to pull his team within two points. Twenty-two seconds later he hits a shot that ties the game for the eighth time. After a missed Slatington attempt, Bechtold is fouled as the buzzer sound and drills a free throw for the win. Bechtold ends with 14 points, 11 of them coming in the final frame. Jimmy Maehrer also scores 14 points, while Morgan Haak contributes 13.
