Warmest Regards: Just can’t get enough
Way back in 1981, the band Depeche Mode had a big hit with its song “Just can’t Get Enough.”
Every time I hear the song it stirs memories of the happy dance I had with my daughter Andrea.
When she played that song we couldn’t sit still. We danced all over the house, in and out of rooms and up and down stairs, dancing to the compelling beat.
Even today, I can’t sit still when I play the song. It was made for dancing.
I have so many fun memories of our crazy dancing. Yet, we only did our “crazy dances” when she played “Just Can’t Get Enough.”
Those memories point out the difference between having fun teenagers in the house and not having them there.
I never realized how having teenagers in the house kept me young until they were gone and the house seemed so quiet. So many parents tell me there is a definite difference after the kids leave home.
Every now and then I like to go on YouTube to play the jazzy song. It brings back enjoyable memories but I don’t dance in and out of rooms like I did when Andrea was home.
Today when I turned on the song “Just Can’t Get Enough” I noted that it didn’t say what was the thing they just couldn’t get enough.
So today, just for fun, I made a quick list of some things I would put under the category of Just Can’t Get Enough.
Right at the top of the list I wrote that I just can’t get enough of fun with my daughters. While we no longer do our crazy dances we still have fun.
Whether it’s kayaking with my kids and grandkids or simply conversations around the campfire, it’s definitely fun being with them.
And yes, they definitely make me feel younger. No matter what we do together, I just can’t get enough of being with them.
When we first get together in Maine each year I just can’t get enough of listening to them tell me what’s going on in their lives.
When it comes to telling personal stories, no one can beat my son-in-law Greg. His documentary “Song Sung Blue” was made into a movie that just came out this month.
I’ll tell you the story behind the new movie another week. I’m not allowed to write about the new movie based on Greg’s documentary until the movie version premiered this month.
But I will tell you this. Director Craig Brewer did a great job making the new movie, and I think you’ll enjoy it.
Meanwhile, back to my list of things I just can’t get enough. …
I just can’t get enough of good news. It doesn’t have be my good news. I like to hear any happy story because we don’t get enough of celebrating good things that happen.
Along those lines, I can’t get enough of hearing about people who have overcome adversity.
Perhaps those stories will encourage others battling big problems.
I can’t get enough of meeting new people. For me, getting to know new people offers a treasure-trove of possibilities. We gain when we hear new stories and I always find it fascinating to learn about the amazing backgrounds of others I meet.
I can’t get enough of applauding good people who thrive on helping others.
Sometimes all it takes to help an entire area is one strong leader willing to organize a needed project.
My friend Andy is just one person with vision to improve a neighborhood. When he realized the swales of our many canals needed to be cleaned to prevent flooding he went to works shoveling. Soon others joined in when they saw the merits of what Andy was doing to prevent more flooding.
Some like to sit back and wait for the other person to do what has to be done. Some say, “Let the county do it.” Thankfully, we have people like Andy and other volunteers who work for the good of the community.
I can’t get enough of watching sweet little children. Children help us remember what it’s like to have simple fun.
Little kids know you don’t need to spend a lot of money to have fun. They teach us what we forgot about having fun.
I am now relearning how to set aside time for fun.
I can’t get enough of a few friends who are always there for me when I need help.
I can’t get enough of going to church on Sunday then going out for breakfast with anyone who wants to join us. It’s often the highlight of my week.
I can’t get enough of relaxing with music before I end the night. Sometimes I listen to classical music, especially the music of Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli or Andre Rieu.
Sometimes I listen to favorite hymns, and sometimes I like hearing the oldies. Music from my teenage years makes me a kid again.
Most of all, I can’t get enough of thanking God for this wonderful world of ours. There is always so much to see and appreciate.
OK, what’s on your list that makes you say you just can’t get enough?
