Monroe County commissioners Chairman John Christy made a point to alert the community to a recent hack involving a program that was used in the county called CodeRed.
“It has been hacked,” he said.
The emergency notification program was a victim of a ransomware attack in November. Christy said the hack affected people across the country and internationally, not just in Monroe County.
He asked that anybody who uses the program to change their passwords in order to protect their data.
Christy also said he had some positive news.
Eight inmates at the Monroe County Correctional Facility graduated from the Serve Safe education program about eight weeks ago. The training was provided by Aramark, which is the food provider at the correctional facility.
Completion of the program gives the students a five-year certification, which gives them documentation that can help them in the job market when they get out.
“That’s part of a larger commitment that the county is doing with Crossroads initiatives and other organizations,” he said.
Christy said they also are working with other groups to help the inmates get the General Educational Development, which is a high school equivalency degree.
“It’s just one first step of many to come,” he said.
