N. Lehigh begins work on budget

Northern Lehigh School District won’t surpass the tax rate index in the event it chooses to raise property taxes for the 2026-27 school year.

On a 7-0 vote, the school board on Monday adopted the Act 1 tax levy resolution not to exceed the 4.8% index.

This year, taxpayers saw a 2.5% increase in their property taxes after the board on a narrow 5-4 margin approved the general fund balance of $43,015,620 for 2025-26.

It called for a millage rate of 25.9914 in Lehigh County (per $100 assessed valuation), and a millage rate of 77.7220 in Northampton County (per $100 assessed valuation).

Before that vote, district business manager Sherri Molitoris said the estimated fund balance as of June 30 of this year would be $16,871,542.

Molitoris said they would use $871,139 of the district’s assigned fund balance for the balancing of the budget.

She said expenses were $40,324,052, while revenues without fund balance use were $38,786,129.

Estimated ending fund balance was $16,000,403, with utilization of $871,139 for onetime purchases and future planned district needs.
