Pink Dress Cancer Run/Walk event scheduled Oct. 11

They get to wear a pink dress all in the name of two women from the Northern Lehigh community who are currently going through treatment for breast cancer.

A Pink Dress Cancer Run/Walk will be held at noon Oct. 11. It starts at the Skeet Club Grove, on Skeet Club Road in Slatington.

The 21-plus event is part scavenger hunt, part bar crawl throughout the Slatington/Walnutport area during which participants are encouraged to wear a pink dress or any pick attire to bring attention to the fundraiser.

While running, they sing songs, have fun, stop at bars and backyards for drinks and snacks, and collect money that goes directly to the recipients.

The goal is to raise $3,500 through the event, according to Alice Wanamaker, an event volunteer.

Wanamaker said once they get back to the Grove after the run/walk, there will be a slow cooker cook-off, food, raffles, music, dancing, and prizes for the best dressed and best slow cooker entry — and a lot of fun.

“About 2017, one of our friends, community members, was undergoing treatment for breast cancer,” Wanamaker said. “We wanted to find a way to help her, she had two young kids.

“The cost of these treatments are just ridiculous. It’s a way to help ease that little bit.”

Wanamaker explained why they decided to hold the event for the two women.

“We don’t want to have to wait months and months and lose parts of what we raised,” she said. “We wanted to be able to give them money for Christmas and bills.”

Wanamaker said they will start selling raffle tickets for donated raffle baskets, fellowship.

“We want to be on Main Street in Slatington and Walnutport,” she said. “That’s what we’re doing, we’re raising money.”

From there, Wanamaker said they will come back to Skeet Club Grove after a 4- or 5-mile walk around town and finalize the sales of raffle tickets.

“If people want to support and can’t come out to event, they can donate to our Venmo code, they can buy raffle tickets from noon to 4,” she said. “They do not need to be present to win.”
