Community welcomes home injured boy

Parker Brode is finally home.

The 6-year-old Barnesville boy, who suffered a severe spinal cord injury in an April ATV crash, was greeted Tuesday morning by a crowd of friends and family at the Ryan Township Fire Company.

And after a fire whistle sounded several times, an entourage of fire trucks and ambulances escorted Parker to his Locust Valley home.

“He’s a miracle baby,” said Robert Reed, Tamaqua, a close friend of Parker’s family.

Parker, however, still faces a long recovery following the severe accident that happened over the Easter weekend.

Parker, then 5, was a passenger in the ATV that his sister, Madison, 10, was driving. He was ejected when the vehicle struck a tree.

“He was gone,” Parker’s grandmother, Cynthia Domday, said.

She noted that her son, Dr. Anthony “Tony” Domday, was the first one on the scene to administer help. A nurse for five years and now a veterinarian, Tony performed CPR and brought his nephew back to life.

From there, Parker and Madison were flown to Lehigh Valley-Cedar Crest. Parker was later flown to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) for surgery. He spent 10 weeks there.

He has been in rehabilitation at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore ever since.

Cynthia noted that Parker has some mobility on his left side, and is showing some signs of movement on his right side.

“But it’s going to be a while,” she said.

Parker is in a wheelchair, and still has a ventilator and a feeding tube, she noted.

Thankfully, she said, Parker’s mind is intact.

“We are fortunate that he still has his mind. He knows what happened. He knows about the accident and he remembered. He’s been very alert — he just has a very severe spinal cord injury,” Cynthia said.

She noted that Parker graduated from kindergarten in June and will attend first grade at Mahanoy Area Elementary School.

“The school is going to pick him up,” Cynthia explained.

Neighbors Deacon John and Ellie Setlock were among those who welcomed Parker home.

“He used to be playing in the field all the time. He’s such an active boy,” said Ellie, who wore a green “ParkerStrong” T-shirt.

Since the accident happened, the Setlocks have been praying for Parker’s recovery.

“He’s such a sweetheart — and they are the best neighbors,” Ellie said. “He shouldn’t even be here — so God bless them.”

“It’s been a long time coming. We’re so thankful,” Cynthia said. “My initial thought was that I didn’t care if he came home in a wheelchair, as long as he came home to us.”

Parker’s parents, Brian and Anna (Domday) Brode, will continue taking him to therapy twice a week in Baltimore.

Madison has since recovered.

A fundraiser for the family continues at givesendgo.com and updates on Parker’s condition are posted on the ParkerStrong Facebook page.
