Local Roundup: Results from Sept. 13

Northwestern enjoyed more soccer success over the weekend as the Tigers gained wins against Southern Lehigh in both boys and girls action.

Also continuing its winning ways Saturday was the Tamaqua tennis team, which defeated Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg.

GIRLS SOCCER

Northwestern-So. Lehigh

Sophia Schaffer recorded three goals and an assists to lead unbeaten Northwestern to a 4-0 victory over Southern Lehigh in Colonial league play.

Kherington Yezik added a goal and a pair of helpers for the Tigers, who have outscored their opposition 59-1 this season.

Olivia Reinhart made five saves to earn the shutout win.

Jim Thorpe-Bangor

Bangor scored six goals in the opening half and went on to a 10-0 shutout of Jim Thorpe in Colonial League play.

Raegan Toomey netted four goals for Bangor, while the winners also received a pair of tallies from Kyle Dalla Palu.

Williams Vy.-No. Lehigh

Northern Lehigh dropped a 2-0 non-league decision to Williams Valley.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 1-7, while the Vikings improved to 5-4, having won five in a row after starting the season with four losses.

BOYS SOCCER

Northwestern- So. Lehigh

Logan Messics scored the game-winner 15 seconds into overtime to help Northwestern edge Southern Lehigh, 3-2, in Colonial League action.

Messics, who scored two goals, took a pass from Caelan Stangil for the tiebreaker that lifted the Tigers to their seventh-straight victory. Stangil added the Tigers’ final goal.

Northwestern has not lost since they dropped a 4-3 decision to Pennsbury in the season opener Aug. 22.

Bangor scored both goals in the second half to blank Jim Thorpe, 2-0, in Colonial League play.

Dalton Pasco and Jack Lambert accounted for the two Slater tallies.

The loss snapped the Olympians’ three-game winning streak.

Saucon Valley’ Stephan Goudsouzian tallied a pair of second-half goals to lift Saucon Valley to a 3-1 Colonial League victory over Lehighton.

Zachary Jaworowski also scored for the winners.

For Lehighton, Chase Lobasso found the net off an assist from Sawyer Hoffman.

Salem Christian marched out to a 7-0 lead and then added three more goals in the second half for a 10-2 win over winless Weatherly.

The Wreckers received goals from both Corbin Wagner and Jeremiah Donadi.

Hamburg secured a 4-1 non-league win over Northern Lehigh.

Fiona Jones scored on an assist from McKenzie Chruscial in the fourth quarter for the Bulldogs, who got 19 saves from Maddy Husack.

Tamaqua-Notre Dame ES

Emma Ziajka and Chloe Ryan both recorded singles wins to help Tamaqua earn a 3-2 victory over Notre Dame East Stroudsburg.

Ryan didn’t lose a game in her match, while Ziajka triumphed in a tiebreaker.

The Raiders also received a straight-set victory from the doubles team of Destiny Steinmetz and Serenity Sanchez.

CROSS COUNTRY

Cardinal Clash at P. Grove

Tamaqua competed in the Cardinal Clash, with the girls earning a second-place team finish and the boys ending in third.

Shaylee Gormely paced the Blue Raider girls, earning second on the 3.1-mile course in a time of 21:52.

The Tamaqua boys received a third place from Aidan Elston, crossing in 17:27.

The Raiders’ junior high girls also had a successful showing, taking first as a team.
