NL off to successful start of new year

Northern Lehigh School District has reported a successful beginning to the 2025-2026 school year.

Dr. Tania Stoker, assistant superintendent, and Dr. Matthew J. Link, superintendent, provided a presentation to the school board on Monday about the start of the school year.

Stoker said that on the second week of August, they welcomed their new teachers to the district.

On the third week of August, they held in-service week, and the week of Aug. 25 marked the first day of school for students.

Link then reported on the district’s third day enrollment numbers.

He said at Peters Elementary, kindergarten was at 108 students; first grade, 125; and second grade, 124. The total building enrollment was 357 students.

“Kindergarten is actually up to about 114, 115,” Link said. “This is still a moving target.”

Link noted that these numbers have changed since the third day of school.

“We’re still continuing to see some students dis-enroll, and believe it or not we’re actually seeing some students enroll for the start of the new school year,” he said. “We always just do the third-day snapshot.”

At Slatington Elementary, enrollment was 136 third grade students; fourth grade, 112; fifth grade, 114; and sixth grade, 121. The total building enrollment was 483 students.

Northern Lehigh Middle School had 131 students and 122 eighth graders, for a total building enrollment of 253 students.

Northern Lehigh High School had 117 ninth grade students; 117 in 10th grade; 110 in 11th grade; and 104 in 12th grade. The total building enrollment was 448 students.

“This does not include students placed in our IU classrooms, it is not including Northern Lehigh students that are placed in out-of-district placements, and it does not include the students that are fully enrolled in Bulldog Academy,“ he said. “This is actual Northern Lehigh students in traditional classrooms within the school building.”

Board President Mathias Green asked how the enrollment compare to last year.

“We’re right about the same,” Link said. “I think right now we may be a little bit higher, but that will continue to ebb and flow probably for the next few weeks yet.”
