Palmerton Band on Main Stage with favorites

The Palmerton Community Band is scheduled to perform from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday on the Main Stage at this year’s Palmerton Community Festival.

While for years the band has performed from the bandstand, this will mark the band’s first performance on the Main Stage in over 20 years, noted director Joe Plechavy.

“We used to perform on the Main Stage when it was on the other side of the park,” Plechavy said. “We found out last year that the Main Stage was open but it was too late, so we will go over there this year,”

Plechavy said the band will adjust to its new locale.

“There’s usually not a whole pile of people in the park at that time, but we’ll see,” he said. “We may just decide to go back to the bandstand next year.”

Plechavy said that Mitchell Hourt, assistant director, will conduct several tunes.

“We’re covering everything from marches to Broadway musicals, doing a tribute to Elvis, medley from ‘Grease,’ ” he said. “We are featuring band member Beth Kutzner, on ‘Where Dreams Dance.’ ”

Plechavy said the band has about 30 members, and looks forward to once again performing at this year’s festival.

“The band has been performing at the festival since it was known as the hospital festival, and it is important that we keep live music alive,” he said. “The band is always in need of more members.”

The tradition of concerts in the park dates back to 1911, when Stuart Prutzman became leader of the newly organized and incorporated band.

Plechavy said that anyone wishing to join the band can talk to any member at the festival, or contact him at 610-360-8343.
