The head of Northern Lehigh School District has advocated for a state budget that calls for reform to the Cyber Charter School funding.
Superintendent Dr. Matthew J. Link briefly addressed the topic at last week’s school board meeting.
“I have spent a lot of time this summer meeting with, talking with, writing to, emailing legislators from both parties and in both chambers and the governor’s office directly,” Link said. “Spent some days in Harrisburg advocating for not only them to pass the budget, but to also include with that or through legislative mechanisms reform for cyber charter school funding.
“This is an issue critical to the work that we’re trying to do, and we put a lot of time into that this summer. My colleagues here in the room, other administrators have also been doing that on behalf of the school district as well as many school board members urging them to pass reform to the cyber charter school funding.”
Link added: “If we were to do that, they would cap it at $8,000 recommended by the governor, $8,000 tuition cap for students without disabilities attending cyber charter schools, that would save us about at least $300,000 a year.
“For a school district like us, that’s a game changer. For many school districts, that’s a game-changer. So I encourage you all to continue to advocate for that.”
A new budget was due June 30, but the state House and Senate are at an impasse.
