August 20, 1970 — Jim Abromitis pitches a no-hitter to lead Tamaqua to a 1-0 Panther Valley Little League Tournament win over Coaldale. The game actually started a day earlier but was stopped after one inning due to weather issues. The winners plate the only run of the contest in the second when Dave Angst reaches on an error, moves up on a Tom Matalavage single and scores on Bede Portz’s RBI hit. Abromitis finishes with 10 strikeouts, while Matalavage ends with a pair of hits and turns in two outstanding defensive plays in right field — one which leads to a double play.
