Lehighton Borough Council
Lehighton Borough Council acted on or discussed the following business last week:
• Street line painting will continue over the next few weeks, Borough Manager Dane DeWire reported crews will also paint the crosswalks in the borough, planning to complete the work before school starts.
• Accepted letters with intent to retire from Patty Bissel and Cathy Smith.
• Council will also be holding two meetings regarding filling vacancies. On Aug. 25, members of the Vacancy Hiring Committee, which is most of the council members, will meet to review the applications that are received, and then will meet Sept. 2 to conduct interviews. Approvals of hirings will be done at the Sept. 8 public meeting.
• Approved the request by the Parks & Recreation Department to host Trees in the Park from Nov. 24 through Jan. 12.
• Approved the tree lighting ceremony for Sunday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the borough parks, which will include closing off both blocks of South Street, and Constitution Avenue during the event.
• On Saturday, there will be a Kids Performing Arts program in the amphitheater to celebrate performing arts in the community. Members of the Zion Opera Workshop Junior and the Pale Moon Players will partner together for the program.
• Music in the Park continues on Sept. 6 from 6-9 p.m. with the band Bad Influence performing.
• Cleanup of the Lehigh Canal in Weissport is rescheduled for Sept. 13, beginning at 9 a.m.
• Police Chief Troy Abelovsky advised borough council that Lehighton will be celebrating its National Night out on Oct. 7 at Baer Memorial Park. National Night Out is usually held the second Tuesday in August; however, last year Lehighton had to postpone its event until October due to inclement weather. The October date worked so well that this year the event will be held on Oct. 7.
• The Lehighton Fire Department will hold its annual Strategic Planning Meeting at 9 a.m. Aug. 30 at the fire department building on South Third Street.
• Light and Power Department Superintendent Barry Fisher reported that workers will be cutting trees along Route 209 in the borough today and Wednesday. As a result, there will be single-lane traffic in that area from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.
• Mayor Ryan Saunders advised that the borough, along with Carbon County, had helped in clearing out the “tent city” area within the borough along the Lehigh River. He reported that Public Works had removed 11 dumpsters of debris from that area. There will be continued efforts to keep the area cleared and secure.
