Lansford discusses road equipment

Lansford Borough Council on Wednesday tabled bids for renting a milling machine as it explores associated costs, and again moved to sell its asphalt zipper, which also has been used for milling streets.

The borough received bids for renting a milling machine from M&J Excavating of Bloomsburg at $2,500 an hour and $10,000 a day, and Schuylkill Paving of Schuylkill Haven, at $1,500 an hour and $10,000 a day.

“We also have to pay for trucks. We have to have at least three trucks lined up in order to take this stuff away,” Council President Bruce Markovich said. “It’s going to get substantially expensive here.”

Councilman Joe Butrie said they were supposed to send in a price for the trucks, but the borough can check with a local contractor for a price.

Markovich pointed out that the borough has a meeting with John Davis of the state Department of Transportation, and they could run the bids by him.

Council tabled the bids, which can be held for up to 60 days.

Council held off on selling the asphalt zipper last month, because it did not receive bids for milling streets and wanted the machine to get some paving done if milling bids were unsuccessful again.

On Wednesday, Butrie again asked council to put the zipper up for sale, saying the machine is too big for the borough’s loader and it’s only made for doing a small area, such as a trench.

“I’d like to sell it and that way some of the money can go back in to (state) Liquid Fuels,” he said. “We haven’t used it once this year. It’s just sitting there. Let’s get rid of it.”

Council members went back and forth on whether or not the streets crew wanted to keep the zipper or not, and agreed that the crew wasn’t happy with the machine.

The only bid last time was for $35,100, which was $100 more than what the borough set as a minimum. Markovich said they should ask more for the machine, and possibly get an idea on its value from the manufacturer who was sending a representative up last week.
