Beltzville provides backdrop for painting classes
“Plein Air” is the French term for “out of doors” painting which captures the essence of the subject in its natural state. Painter John Pierson is offering people an opportunity to learn this technique at Beltzville State Park.
Pierson first became interested in painting while watching the Thomas Crown affair 10 years ago. The paintings in the movie caught his eye and he began watching YouTube videos and then took classes at Montgomery County Community College.
He is studying art in Lancaster. His preferred medium is oil paints.
Pierson found it “interesting to capture art, and the beauty of nature on the canvas” and wanted to share the experience.
He explained that the sun is moving about every two hours and the light hitting the scenery changes so painters keep “chasing the light and the shadows.”
On an overcast day there’s more time to paint a scene but the colors don’t pop. He showed two paintings of the exact same scene that look completely different at different times of day.
On this day members of the Friends of Beltzville group attended the painting class. Sherry Ferguson, who majored in Fine Arts and Art History, was learning techniques from Pierson.
Ferguson likes realism. “I like to paint what I see,” she said. The park provides a great opportunity.
Pierson typically paints landscapes but does some animal paintings. There are plenty of landscape choices at the park, differing by simply moving your easel.
Pierson’s paintings and prints are available for purchase at the park as well as a tote bag with the park’s beautiful covered bridge on it.
If you’re interested in learning Plein Air, a white tent is set up near the swimming beach at the park. No experience is necessary. Lessons are available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 or 5 p.m., depending on weather.
